EXAM MODIFICATIONS

The Office for Students with Disabilities provides test accommodation services as a convenience for faculty and students. Test administrations handled by the Office for Students with Disabilities involve only physical assistance in accordance with the student’s functional limitation (e.g., reading, writing, time extensions).

Exam Modification Procedures

  1. The Office for Students with Disabilities hosts exams when instructors cannot provide students with test accommodations; staff from the Academic Assistance Center and Student Support Services also assist with this process.
    1. The service is structured to provide students with a fair opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of course content without resulting in a competitive academic advantage over other students.
    2. The student is not allowed to use notes, books, tapes, or any supplementary material unless specified by the instructor to the Office for Students with Disabilities staff.
    3. The Office for Students with Disabilities does not make copies of exams and does not maintain an exam file.
    4. Exams are received and returned according to prearranged instructions.
  2. The following procedures should be followed when setting up test accommodations with the Office for Students with Disabilities:
    1. The student and disability specialist discuss the accommodation(s) needed.
    2. The disability specialist notifies the instructor of the disability-related need for test accommodations. The disability specialist provides consultation and advocacy if necessary.
    3. The instructor and staff from the Office for Students with Disabilities, AAC, or SSS make arrangements for exam administrations.
    4. The Office for Students with Disabilities, AAC, or SSS administers the exam and returns it according to pre-arranged instructions.
    5. All students who request test accommodations through the Office for Students with Disabilities are given policies and procedures outlining their role in arranging this service.
