Services Available
Before the semester begins:
- Prospective student visits
- Assistance with faculty contacts concerning classroom accommodations
- Advocacy for access needs
- Individualized building orientation tours
- Priority registration (option) for qualified students
- Assistance verifying the availability of interpreter or captionist services through the Regional Service Center
NOTE: Inquiries related to the availability of interpreter or captionist services should be initiated several months
prior to enrollment because of limited availability of services in this area.
UMC has begun to work with remote real-time captioning services to meet the accomodation needs.
In the Classroom:
- Assistance arranging for peer note taker OR permission for taped lectures
- Access assistance for physical disabilities
adjustable work stations, academic assistants
- Academic skills development classes (Academic Assistance Center/Student Support Services)
- Alternative print formats
- Classroom accommodations OR room rescheduling assistance
Out of the classroom:
- Taped textbooks and reading assignments
NOTE: Requires minimum one month advance notice. Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) eligibility important - application assistance available.
- Peer tutoring assistance (Academic Assistance Center/Student Support Services)
- Adapted testing option NOTE: Must be arranged in advance with consent of the instructor.
- Advocacy for special needs
- Individual counseling and/or support groups
- TTY and amplified phones available in select locations on campus
- Specialized computer software
- Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) for low vision students
- Consultation re:: Adaptive Technology
- Large print encyclopedia, atlas and dictionary (Kiehle Library and Academic Assistance Center)
- Assistance with the development of a transition packet for transfer students
- Assistance with on-campus housing needs
- Referral to outside agencies for additional services not available at UMC
- Interagency transition planning
