Suggestions for Success at UMC

For the best possibility of success at UMC, students with disabilities will likely have at least average academic ability, with or without accommodations, in areas related to the chosen program of study. Successful students will demonstrate an ability and desire to manage their academic and personal lives to enhance performance. They will have knowledge of, and a willingness to use the accommodations that are necessary for success, and will demonstrate a commitment to the educational experience.

Students eligible to enter UMC should expect to encounter the same standards for performance and completion of degrees that would be encountered at another campus, but with the following features:

  1. The availability of developmental coursework in the areas of writing and mathematics
  2. Mandatory placement into developmental coursework based on ACT subscores
  3. Smaller classes, relatively easy access to advising, generally brief turnaround time for tutoring requests and other support services
  4. Each full-time, regularly enrolled student will be leased a computer for use in and out of class. Students with disabilities who have been provided by state or federal agencies laptop computers that have specialized hardware or software related to a disability issue, may be eligible for reductions in the UMC technology fee if certain conditions are met. The computers must be compatible with the UMC system and must have compatible loads. Students will be issued UMC user I.D.s and will have email and internet access. Students with disabilities using non-UMC issued computers are responsible for the maintenance of their computers, but may use Help Desk or ITC expertise as needed to resolve system access questions. Students using non-UMC issued laptops with the UMC system are subject to the same user guidelines as all other students.

To request a technology fee reduction, you must have registered with the UMC Office for Students with Disabilities, demonstrate that you have met all other criteria with the UMC Help Desk, and agree to comply with University guidelines for computer users. Once all criteria have been met, OSD will recommend the technology fee reduction, and the Help Desk will forward approval to the UMC Business Office/ Student Accounts.
